Ministers of the countries making the UN look set to ignore key advice that the public should drastically cut their sugar intake to avoid obesity, heart disease and diabetes, it has emerged. But whether the Nigerian government is taking any stands on this could not be ascertained before posting of this article.
Moreover in a major announcement last week, the World Health Organisation urged adults and children to limit their sugar consumption to six teaspoons a day - half the current, average levels.
But the head of the panel of scientists advising the Government has said they will 'not act' on these recommendations.
Professor Ian MacDonald - who has
previously worked for Mars and Coca Cola - said they will produce their own
guidelines for the UK which will merely 'take note' of the expert advice.
Until very recently Professor
MacDonald was paid by both Mars and Coca Cola to work as an advisor which has
led experts to question whether he should be helping set the nation's sugar
limits.
And it has since emerged that
alongside Professor MacDonald, a total of six of the eight scientists who will
draw up the guidelines on sugar have links to junk food firms.
So those who love sugar should be
warned!
