The fight between two elephants, the music COPYRIGHT society of Nigeria (MCSN) and Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) over who has the right to copyright collection on behalf of Nigerian musical artistes had necessitated the total ban of the artistic works of those having copyright agreement with COSON by IBAN and BON. This means the music of the affected musicians shall not be played on Nigeria`s radio and TV stations.
In the words of the image maker of Tuface, "It`s a joke. their action is impracticable. It`s unfortunate. It`s the first time in history and it`s obviously a gambit. This is a clear fact that those who infringes are more interested in using intimidating tactics of resolving issues. For we are supposed to come to table to sincerely discuss what misgivings they have. But they have chosen to pull this stunt. It`s just evidence that they are not been sincere. If you claim you are happy with the rate given to you and you are ready to pay such royalties why give out threats where you could have come to bargain for lower rate?"
Efe however blamed the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) for not doing much to help the situation. He stated that the industry have been forwarded by the rate and not even IBAN and BON did come out in three years to say anything against it.
For a spokesman of COSON, Chinedu Chukwuji said that the law of broadcasting in Nigeria states that Nigerian music shall constitute the bulk of local content. He quoted the DG of the NBC, Emeka Uba saying that every broadcast station in Nigeria was bound by the music quota provided by the broadcast code. He did not see how the stations can meet their local content by this. He commented that the issue was of serious concern to the NBC. That a joint session would be made by COSON and the NBC to resolve the issue, this was also the view of the NCC. The NCC was the body made by law to settle dispute arising from the rate issue.
