The governor of Lagos State,
Babatunde Fashola has declared war on Lagosians and visitors to the state that
are prone to crossing the expressways. To make this effective a memo has been
sent to the Kick Against Indiscipline agency of the state to apprehend and
prosecute anyone found crossing the expressways where there are pedestrian
bridges nearby. However recent findings revealed the failure of the order as most Lagosians still use the expressways even where there is a footbridge close by.
In a bid to curbing the excesses
of those taken to contravening the laws KAI operatives were recently seen at
the popular Ojota Bus-stop warming, preventing and arresting people. One
noticeable event that day was the arrest of a young man who had to resist the
uniform men from doing their duty. This resulted in a fight, with the young man
grabbing the pair of trousers of the KAI Officer in retaliation to the holding
of his denims. The near comic scene got the rapt attention of people around. By
the time of filling this report, the fate of the arrested man could not be
ascertained.
Moreover a KAI officer who spoke
with TNS revealed, “We`ve been ordered since Monday 22nd February,
2014 to effect the arrest of anybody
that chooses to cross the expressway instead of using the footbridge especially
were one is close by. That is what we have started to do until Lagosians learn
to do the right. Do you know how many of them die each day trying to cross the
ever busy highway?”
