Police arraign 5 brothers over N91.5m fraud

 

The police on Wednesday arraigned five brothers in an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, charged with N91.5 million land fraud.
The brothers are Nojimu Alonge; 65, Mohammed Alonge; 60, Tawakalitu Alonge; 65, Dalili Alonge; 54 and Bariu Alonge; 54, facing charges of conspiracy, obtaining money on false pretext, stealing and forceful entry.
The prosecutor, Insp. Daniel Akpochi, told the court that the accused committed the offences in 2011 at No. 1, Stone House, Oko-Ado, Ajah, Lekki Expressway, Lagos.
He said the brothers induced one Chief Stephen Ajose to part with N91.5 million on false pretext as they made him believe that they would assist him to secure 125 acres of land at Oreki village, on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Nigeria is free from Ebola – Health Ministry print

Nigeria has cleared all patients being monitored for the Ebola virus, the federal health ministry said on Wednesday, but doctors said they would have to wait to declare the outbreak over.
“There is nobody under surveillance for the Ebola virus in any part of Nigeria,” health ministry spokesman Dan Nwomeh told AFP.
“All those under surveillance have completed their mandatory 21-day period stipulated by the WHO (World Health Organization).”
Eight people have died out of 20 confirmed cases in Nigeria since July, according to WHO, although the Nigerian government gave a lower figure of seven deaths in 19 cases.
In all 529 people were placed under medical surveillance for signs of the disease in the commercial capital Lagos and the oil-producing Rivers State.
Four of those who died were healthcare workers who treated Liberian government official, Patrick Sawyer, who brought the virus into the country from Monrovia.
The head of the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) for Ebola in Lagos, Faisal Shuaib, also confirmed that there were no current confirmed cases or anyone under surveillance in Nigeria.

Some illegal train passengers, who were hanging on a moving train at the Ikeja Along bus stop, Lagos have attacked two journalists, causing the death of one of them.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the miscreants had jumped off the train on Tuesday at about 9am and attacked the journalists.

The miscreants were said to have accused the journalists of filming them with the intention of exposing their antics through their medium.

An unfortunate condition appears to have worked for the good of one of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, as she was found abandoned after health issues obviously forced the Boko Haram sect to drop her off at Kalaha, a remote village in Borno State.
The girl, who was discovered and identified by students in the village, gave her name as Susan Ishaya. She explained that she had been abandoned two days earlier, having been driven to the area in a Volkswagen Golf car.

New York Police Arrest Pro-Jonathan Hirelings Fighting Over Cash

Law enforcement officers of the New York Police Department yesterday dispersed clashing groups of hired supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan who stormed the venue of a book launch at the Pier Hotel in Manhattan.

Several witnesses at the event told SaharaReporters that a group of homeless men hired from the streets of Newark, New Jersey, clashed with another pro-Jonathan group made up of Nigerians from the New York area. A fracas broke out when some of the homeless hirelings feared that members of the Nigerian group were planning to hijack the payment of $50 per person the organizers had promised to pay.
NYPD Disorder Control Unit As a melee ensued, and the police stepped in and arrested some of the pro-Jonathan hirelings fighting over the sharing of booty.
Investigation revealed that the trouble began when the collection of homeless supporters rented by the organizers demanded their payment shortly after arriving at the venue. As they were pressing for payment, they noticed that a group of Nigerians had taken to chanting pro-Jonathan slogans. Afraid that the Nigerians had been brought in to deny them the payment they had been promised, the homeless group began chanting “Bring back our girls,” the slogan of a global campaign that urges Nigerian government officials to take seriously the task of rescuing more than 200 schoolgirls who were in mid-April abducted from a school in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents.
Embarrassed by their song, which they took up from a group of demonstrators, the handlers of the rented crowd made frantic efforts to coach them on the scene to sing President Jonathan’s praises.
New York police intervened after some members of the rented crowd got in a free-for-all scuffle with members of a rival pro-Jonathan group. As the situation threatened to cause a breakdown of law and order, a few police officers swung into action, dispersed the crowd, and took away four of them inhandcuffs.

We Have Nothing To Do With Boko Haram Leader, Shekau’s Reported Killing – DHQ Finally Declares

The military high command yesterday, said that it could not confirm that the high ranking leader of the Boko Haram sect killed by troops in Konduga, Borno State was Abubakar Shekau. This is even as it dismissed as speculation, the reports in some section of the media that Shekau was the one killed by troops. An online media had in a report, which was celebrated by some newspapers, expressed the concern that from all indications, the Boko Haram leader may have finally been killed during the September 17 war of Konduga.
However, the Defence Headquarters, DHQ, in a reaction said that a prominent Boko Haram leader was killed, but it didn’t know if he was Shekau or not. Asked if it was sure that the Boko Haram Commander killed by its troops was Shekau, the DHQ through its Director of Defence Information, DDI, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, told our correspondent that, “I don’t know.” Olukolade, who ordinarily would have been expected to celebrate the report as victory, rather dissociated the DHQ from it saying, the DHQ had nothing to do with it. Olukolade said: “I hope you know we did not say anything about it, did we?” He however indicated to speak very soon on the dead Boko Haram Commander.

The African National Congress Youth League has called on the Jacob Zuma-led South African government not to issue a visa to the General Overseer of the Synagogue of All Nations, Pastor Temitope Joshua.

Joshua had expressed on Sunday his desire to visit South Africa to commiserate with the families of 84 citizens of the country who lost their lives when a building of the church collapsed in Lagos on September 12.

About 115 people died in the tragedy and Joshua had described those who lost their lives as martyrs to the consternation of South Africans.

With $620 million in estimated pre-tax earnings, veteran rapper and record producer Dr. Dre topped Forbes list as the highest paid hip hop artist, ousting Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs from the top spot.

Forbes said Dre's estimated annual earnings for the 12 months between June 2013 and 2014 are the highest of any musician in any genre it has ever evaluated, and more than the combined takings of the other 24 names on the hip-hop list released on Tuesday.

There was anxiety at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) campus in Akwa Ibom State yesterday when a part one student (names withheld) was caught with two hand grenades tucked in his bag by operatives of Peace on Campus Initiatives (PCI), an anti-cultism NGO operating on campuses of higher institutions.
Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), widely speculated as hand grenades, were found in a bag that belonged to the suspect by some students, who alerted the PCI.
National Coordinator of PCI, Mr. Oliver Cromwell, said yesterday that his men in the UNIUYO chapter got information about the suspect keeping the IEDs, and trailed him to his males’ hostel.
Cromwell said his men on discovering the bombs that were well-packaged in a bag in the hostel’s room, apprehended the suspect and invited the  anti-bomb squad of the state police command, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, to the scene for verification. The squad detonated the two devices and searched the hostel rooms for more.

There was confusion on the premises of the Ekiti State High Court on Monday as hoodlums invaded the place to disrupt proceedings in a case challenging the eligibility of the Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, to contest the June 21 governorship election.

South African victims, families may sue Joshua

The Founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun, Lagos State, Prophet T. B. Joshua, may face a class action suit if a plan by a South African opposition party materialises.

The party, the Democratic Alliance,   intends to write to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, urging her to assist South African victims of the SCOAN building collapse and their families to sue the cleric.

The party, according to its   Parliamentarian, Stevens Mokgalapa, believes the church may be criminally liable.

He spoke shortly after some survivors of the tragedy, including two orphaned toddlers, arrived in Pretoria and a call by the South African Minister in Charge of Pretoria, Jeff Radebe, for a probe by the Nigerian Federal Government.

Lying in the rubble of the guesthouse, only able to tell if it was night or day through a tiny crack, Lindiwe Ndwandwe heard the screams of others beneath the debris slowly turn silent.
For five days the 33-year-old was trapped inside a toilet next to the dining hall of the collapsed Synagogue Church of All Nations, breathing only through a small hole in the wreckage.
In the end, she was forced to drink her own urine to survive.
“It’s like a dream to me that really, it’s me that came out from here,” the South African told AFP on Sunday as she surveyed the remains of the church in the Nigerian city of Lagos.
“I don’t believe it. The tears that I cry, it’s because I don’t believe.”

appreciated a youth corps member, Ezemagu Sunday Nnamdi, for donating N10,000 to his re-election campaign.
Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, in a statement today, said Jonathan wrote the corps member and said he was "deeply touched and encouraged by the immense support his administration continues to receive from young Nigerians from all parts of the country".
