20yr-old Covenant University Student Kidnapped & Murdered in Lagos

Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances of the gruesome death of a 20-year-old 300 level Electrical Engineering student at Covenant University, Otta in Ogun State, identified as John Chinedu Okere.  Chinedu is said to have left his parents’ house with N6,000 on Wednesday, 6th August 2014 to a Yaba (Lagos) hospital for treatment and he never returned. Going by reports, some of his family members alleged that one of his friends called him earlier that morning to meet him at an undisclosed hotel.

 

Chinedu’s father, Jude Okere, then received an SMS notifying him that Chinedu had been kidnapped. Later, he received a phone call from a hidden number demanding N10 million ransom for his son’s release. The caller allegedly threatened to kill Chinedu, if his parents refused to comply as the line went dead.

According to Chinedu’s father: “ At about mid-day, I received an SMS that John had been kidnapped. Later, I received a phone call from a hidden number. The caller said they had my son, Chinedu and demanded N10 million as ransom threatening to kill him if we refuse to comply. Immediately, I inquired who the caller was, the line went dead. My wife and I quickly reported the case to the Divisional Police Station at Sabo, Yaba.”

The case was reported to the Police at Sabo, Yaba, and later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja the next day where investigations have since commenced.

Two days later, the decomposing corpse of Chinedu was discovered in one of the rooms at ‘DE Homes Hotel’ located in Ejigbo (Lagos) by one of their staff. The hotel manager filed a report at the Ejigbo Divisional Police Station on Friday, 8 August 2014, to report a case of murder.

 Chinedu was murdered in cold and left in a pool of his blood. A 24-year-old suspect, Okorocha Michael, has however been arrested in connection with the murder.

Ondo police arrest notorious robbery suspect

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber said to have been on the police wanted list for a long time.

The suspect, Stephen Thomas, 25, was described by the police as an unrepentant armed robber.

According to the police, the suspect has earlier spent five years behind bars for robbery and on his release, returned to his nefarious acts, raiding and robbing innocent citizens at odd hours.

The indigene of Benue State popularly called “Black” told our correspondent during interrogation that he knew he had been on the police wanted list.

He said his gang attacked one Tanimonwo Mary, a bar owner at Igoba Junction, Akure in April this year, triggering police trail on him.

The suspect, however, blamed his criminal activities on his father’s inability to send him to school.

He said, “I have not killed anybody since I started armed robbery though I have robbed a lot of people, I have not shed blood.

“The condition around me led me into robbery. When I was in primary school, my father could not provide money for my fees and other school materials, so I dropped out.

“After a while, I followed a friend to start another school, but my father said since he did not put me in any school, I should fend for myself. I left school and started out with bad friends, and that was how I went into armed robbery.”

A source at the Alagbaka Government House in Akure has confirmed to a SaharaReporters correspondent that the embattled governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has concluded plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ahead of the 2015 general election.

The source, who is also a stalwart of the Labour Party, LP, in the state said the governor made his intention known at an "expansive meeting" held in Akure, on Friday afternoon.

Spouses of two dead Nigerian Ebola victims test positive - Health Minister

Minister of Health Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu announced today August 22nd that Nigeria has recorded two new cases of the Ebola disease.

The Minister said the two new cases are spouses of dead Ebola victims who had primary contact with late Patrick Sawyer, the man who brought Ebola to Nigeria. Prof. Chukwu said the two new cases are the first secondary contacts in isolation to test positive to the deadly virus.
