Pro-Amaechi Lawmaker Kidnapped

Golden Chioma, a lawyer and Chairman of Judiciary committee of Rivers State House of Assembly representing Etche Constituency was kidnapped last night by unidentified gunmen in Diobu, Port Harcourt, southern Nigeria.

No one knows his whereabouts and the Rivers State Police Command was yet confirm the kidnap at the time of this report.
Chioma is one of pro-Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s lawmakers who recently sponsored the private Bill that amended the Rivers State High Court Amendment Law that gave powers to the State Chief Registrar to assign cases to judges in the absence of a Chief Judge for the state.
The bill was signed into law by Governor Amaechi the day the House had a public hearing on it at the Ministry of Justice auditorium in Port Harcourt on 10 June, 2014.
Since the law was amended, Chioma has had the burden of educating the public on why the High Court Law was enacted following the logjam that arose over the appointment of a substantive Chief Judge for Rivers State.
Court cases have been stalled in various courts because the Rivers State Government rejected Justice Daisy Okocha who was allegedly imposed on it by the National Judicial Council instead of Justice Peter Agumagu, the state government’s preferred candidate.
It is not known if the Lawmaker’s kidnap is politically motivated.
At press time, the abductors had not established contact with the lawmaker’s family.
