What is your view on the fact that there is gradually
coming a drought in younger comedians taking after the likes of you?
Well I think that may a personal
opinion for there are quite a number of young stars here and there. For
instance, Eme popularly known as Bishop Okon is today one of the biggest
by every definition. A few years ago he was not there. So I do not want to believe
that there are no up comer comedians in Nollywood.
There are.
What is the difference between you been a natural
comedian and been an actor?
That may not be a question for
me to answer. It is like asking me to set an exam and also mark my sheet. If
you say I am natural, I will take it as a compliment but to pass judgment on my
colleagues is something I consider un- charitable. I won’t be able to do that.
But I can assure you that having played along side Bishop in a good number of movies he is definitely one of the best
around today.
Has there been any need for established actor comedians
like you to create or discover those to take over from you?
O yes. People like Charles Aworum and I have being
organizing talent hunts as part of our
own way of discovering fresh talents and I am sure a number of my colleagues
too are looking in that direction.
Do you agree that comedy is a lazy man`s way of
interpreting a script?
I do not know those who share
such opinion but if truly someone said that I can tell you rightly that such a
person is wallowing in abject ignorance. For those who know they will tell you
that one of the greatest genre to handle whether by a director or by an actor
is the comic genre. It is a special gift and a special act. I will challenge those
with that opinion to pick up a scene from a comic drama and play it and let’s
see how they can deploy the roles.
And who is the greatest among the established comedy
actors?
How can you ask me, who is the
greatest? I would not know. The onus lies with the viewers to determine who the
greatest is but again I am not so daft not to understand and respect the fact
that those other big comedians like Nkem Owoh, John Okafor, Okey Bakassi and
Charles Aworum are my very senior colleagues. They are the ones I look up to.
So if you are talking of greatness I will not part of it. I am not qualified to
be part of that discuss because people you are asking me to pass judgment on
are my very senior colleagues that I look up to, praying that one day I will be
like them. So how can you ask me to pass a judgment of greatness on such
people?
Is there a plan to have an all comedian cast in a
Nigerian movie?
Oh yes. Why not? I am working on
a flick at the moment that is going to be majorly a four man cast, an all
comedian cast.
What is the subject all about?
It is not what I will let out
for now.
Anyway, can it be right to say people like you make money
by been foolish?
I will say thanks, that if
foolishness has become so lucrative then I think we should have more foolish
men around.
