Those that are against the celebration of Nigeria`s Movie
Industry, Nollywood@20 have been
described as stupid persons. The assertion was given by ace producer and
director Fidelix Duker. He told TNS, "They were misinformed. What Nollywood@20 means to us is that it is
the time movies in Nigeria became more commercial and there was better
conditions for both film makers and actors to enjoy. What we had then were the
theater groups of the Ogunde family
and Ade Afolayan were the entire
crew makes a film.
We know that the first film was shot at Glover Hall in 1902,
another in Jos in 1920. Wole Soyinka and Ladi Ladebo
shot movies too at that early time. Eddie
Ugboma also with Ola Balogun did
some indigenous films. But we are only saying that when it became very vibrant
opening its door to the whole world was when Living in Bondage was produced. I think people should remove
sentiment and tribal issues from this. The industry belongs to all of us, Yoruba, Ibo or Hausa."
Mr. Duker went on, “Film has been in Nigeria all this while. It’s that
some are just trying to continue this tribal war, saying that Nollywood is not 20 years. All the
guilds were involved in the celebration, whether Yoruba or not. At the recent
awards ceremony, awards were given to English speaking and Yoruba actors. Its really stupid for anybody to say film
making in Nigeria did not start 20 years ago and so we cannot celebrate the industry
at 20."
